夫達也者,質直而好義,察言而觀色,慮以下人 (with English)

子張問:「士何如斯可謂之達矣?」子曰:「何哉,爾所謂達者?」子張對曰:「在邦必聞,在家必聞。」子曰:「是聞也,非達也。夫達也者,質直而好義,察言而觀色,慮以下人。在邦必達,在家必達。夫聞業者,色取人而行違,居之不疑。在邦必聞,在家必聞。」

子張問說:士怎樣才稱得上達呢?孔子說:你所謂達是什麽意思?子張說:無論在諸侯國做官或在大夫的采邑做官都要有聲望。孔子說:那是聞,不是達。通達的士,品質正直,追求正義,善於觀察他人行為舉止,凡事為他人考慮。這樣的人無論在諸侯國做官或在大夫的采邑做官都能通達。而有僅僅有聲聞的士,表面上有人德實際上卻行為相反,從來不肯懷疑自己。這樣無論在諸侯國做官或在大夫的采邑做官也有名聲。

Zi Zhang asks: ‘how can an official become eminent?’ Confucius asks: ‘what do you mean by eminent?’ Zi Zhang says: ‘Be famous as an official, whether it’s serving the kingdoms or the feudal lands.’ Confucius says: ‘That’s about being famous, not eminent. People who are eminent, they have virtuous characters, always believe in and pursue justice; they are also good at observing people, and always be considerate for the others. Such people can be eminent whether being an official for the kingdoms or for the feudal lands. People who are after fame, they are seemingly virtuous yet in fact acting the opposite. Plus they never question or reflect on themselves. Famous are they either serving for the kingdoms or serving for feudal lands.’
