Typography: symbol + shape

Firstly I saw one of my Facebook friend’s shared link where a designer created Star War typography using both letters and symbols. These pieces of work use different combination of text and don’t look like text typography at the first glance. Here is a more challenging piece where there is no much altercations of the text itself. Basically all letters are horizontally aligned and only the layout, sizes and colors vary. And with these three variations the author is able to draw a map of the world. As much as how amazing it is, I also doubt whether the author drew it by hand or actually designed and applied some algorithms. The latter approach would be a very interesting casual infovis topic!
